Dual classic winner California Chrome calls Los Alamitos racetrack in Orange County, California, his regular home. After a brilliant spring campaign which saw the chestnut three-year-old colt take the Santa Anita Derby, Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes, Chrome was sent back to his birthplace at Harris Farms for a well-earned vacation. Arriving back at trainer Art Sherman’s barn in mid-July, Chrome has been working back towards a start in the Pennsylvania Derby on September 20th. That race will serve as his one prep before the Breeders’ Cup Classic, a race being touted as a showdown between Chrome and undefeated 2-year-old champion of last year, Shared Belief. Shared Belief, who missed the Triple Crown run due to injury, has returned to the races with a vengeance, already beating older horses in this year’s Pacific Classic. Whatever happens, it’s neat to think that perhaps the best two three-year-olds, if not overall, horses in the country call California home.
